KUALA LUMPUR: Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, will serve out his sentence in Britain and not in Malaysia.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said this was because the 23-year-old was convicted in Britain.
“However, if he commits the same crime here, we will hunt him down.
“But he is a free man after serving his sentence there,” he said yesterday.
Asked if Nur Fitri would be monitored upon his return, Noor Rashid said “no”.
“We keep a record of convicts and suspects in a database. They are called registered offenders,” he explained.
Noor Rashid added that although no official sex offenders’ registry was in place in Malaysia, the police were open to such a proposal if there was a need for one.
Last Friday, British newspapers reported that Nur Fitri was busted in his bedroom in London, on Nov 21 last year.
He was, at the time of the raid, using his laptop and sitting next to a life-size mannequin of a boy.
In his computer was a cache of vile images of child pornography and videos of minors being abused. Many of the files were classified as Category A, meaning they depicted the most extreme form of abuse.
Nur Fitri was reportedly sentenced to five years’ jail after pleading guilty to 13 offences.
Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said that counselling would be provided to Nur Fitri and his family if they sought it.
“Please, come forward. We are not going to reprimand you but help with the rehabilitation process,” she said at a press conference after launching McDonald’s Happy Meal Book programme yesterday.
Rohani said Nur Fitri was obviously “sick” and had to be rehabilitated, and his family would be going through trauma as well.
“We don’t mind helping them,” she said, adding that she understood that such a behaviour did not manifest overnight and could have developed while he was growing up.
Asked if her ministry would push for a sex offenders’ listing, Rohani said it was among the suggestions they were currently gathering.-the star online
